I have been creating pixel art for video games since my time in undergrad when I decided to explore the skill for the purpose of completing solo projects completely by myself. Now, with the introduction of AI, I consider pixel art an incredibly valuable skill of mine that has since been used as an important asset to all my collaborative projects in graduate school.
My pixel art style is greatly inspired by Game Boy-era Zelda-like top down games. When creating pixel art, I create a tile sheet to organize my assets for implementation into Unity using the tile map function. For my Game Boy games (created using GB Studio), tile maps were created using Tiled, an incredible tool for organizing maps on a predefined grid. Additionally, I always create a beautiful corner as soon as possible into development, in order to best picture the final visual product of the game before implementation occurs. This process helps not just for sharing and promotion, but it also helps iron out any potential grid-based issues.
In the future, I hope to explore slightly more detailed styles of pixel art a la "Rain World" and "Blasphemous". As the video game industry powers forward towards innovation in the art department, I am always inspired by the work of pixel artists who mix nostalgia with modern game design mechanics to create an entirely new, exciting piece.
